Antivirus requirement

NOTICE: As of September 2021, existing personal or “home use” licenses for Symantec Endpoint Protection on Windows and Mac operating systems will expire and no new licenses will be procured, maintained, or offered by LLNL. Alternative products are recommended below along with uninstall instructions for Symantec Endpoint Protection.

The Cyber Security Program requires antivirus protection on Windows, Mac and Linux when using VPN to access LLNL resources. Antivirus product suggestions are included below for each OS. Each product must be running with current virus and malware definitions when connecting to LLNL VPN.

The LLNL Service Desk does not provide support for home use or personal systems.

Antivirus Product Suggestions

The following products for Windows, Mac and Linux have been tested with the LLNL VPN resources:
Note: There are many antivirus products on the market, and some Internet Service Providers provide them free. You are welcome to try these products, or any products compatible with LLNL’s VPN service (in the linked page, look for the Antimalware and Firewall Support Charts link, scroll down to the table and look for software that says 'yes' in both the 'GetDefinitionDate' and 'GETRTP' columns). If you cannot gain access to LLNL VPN resources due to an incompatible antivirus product, we suggest you try the tested products below.

  • Windows 10
    • Windows includes Windows Defender as a default antivirus solution installed with the operating system. Windows Defender is turned on by default or will be re-activated upon removal of the Symantec Endpoint Protection software.
  • macOS
    • LLNL suggests installing the free version of Sophos for personal, collaborator or home-use computers. Installation and download instructions are provided here.
  • Linux
    • LLNL suggests installing ClamAV. An installer and instructions are provided here.

Symantec Endpoint Protection Client Removal

Windows 10

Note – The uninstall of Symantec Endpoint Protection will automatically activate the Windows 10 built-in Windows Defender as an antivirus product.

Removal Instructions
  • Click the Windows key on the keyboard or open the “Start” menu.
  • Type “Add or remove programs” in the search window and click on the item in the “Best Match” category.
  • In the “Apps & features” window, scroll through the list of software titles and click on “Symantec Endpoint Protection.”
  • Click the “Uninstall” button (should appear twice to confirm).
  • After the uninstall completes, please reboot before installing any other software.
